Some adoptions are meant to be, whether they’re planned or not. That was the case for Street, formerly known as John Deere, a German Shorthaired Pointer mix, a breed known for their hunting abilities. He found his happily ever after in September 2022 thanks to an urgent call for storm fosters ahead of Hurricane Ian.

Street’s past was a mystery. All we knew was that he had been returned to another shelter multiple times for his “lack of hunting abilities”—a flaw that didn’t sit well with those expecting a skilled hunting dog. But his new family had a different perspective.

When they took him in as a temporary foster during the storm, it didn’t take long for them to realize that he was already home. “It took all of two minutes after hearing he had never really lived in a home to know he wouldn’t be leaving us after the storm,” his adopters shared.

Now, Street is living his best life with his loving family, including his German Shorthaired Pointer brother and human siblings. Though he may not be a skilled hunter of game, he’s mastered the art of being a Velcro dog—always by his family’s side, the quietest guard dog, and an expert in lizard hunting!

For a dog who once lacked a permanent place to call home, Street has certainly found his perfect match. His story is a heartwarming reminder that sometimes, the best family members are the ones we never saw coming.
